Landsat Tree Cover 1.0 released

The GLCF is proud to release the improved version of the Landsat based Tree Cover dataset version 1.0. Upon receiving positive feedback from various users worldwide, we modified our algorithm to improve the handling of errors propagated via MODIS VCF data and improved our tree cover estimation in scenes dominated by water, mostly coastal regions. For more information regarding this dataset, please visit the Landsat based tree cover data and products page.

Paper published in International Journal of Digital Earth

The paper titled "Integrating global land cover products for improved forest cover characterization: an application in North America" was published in the International Journal of Digital Earth. The paper is openly accessible, should you have any questions feel free to contact us.

Landsat Surface Reflectance Version 2 released

GLCF launches version 2.0 of the Global Land Survey (GLS) based Landsat surface reflectance (SR) earth science data record (ESDR). The new version of data should be available via ESDI and FTP. The previous version of the GLS 2000 and 2005 data collection (18129 scenes) has been marked Replaced in ESDI. Version 1 of the GLS SR ESDR will be available via FTP for a month and subsequently deleted.

Since the last version, the 6S aerosol retrieval algorithm was improved to better match MODIS collection 5, which is more accurate over bright surfaces, primarily arid areas. However, saturation still exists over the brightest, snow-covered surfaces. The 6S atmospheric pressure correction scheme was also changed to incorporate NCEP/NCAR reanalysis sea level pressure data.

Smaller, incidental changes include removing a corrupted image for May 12, 2000 of WRS-2 Path 159, Row 51 and ensuring proper radiometric calibration. Proper calibration was ensured by improving handling of input image metadata, including calculating gains using LMIN and LMAX values from the image metadata rather than the gain values reported in the metadata directly.
